This is usually seen as a little outlet near the top rim of the basin/bathtub. It is important to order the correct waste for the type of overflow/non-overflow your product has.

Universal waste means it is compatible with both overflow and non-overflow units. If a product is specific as an overflow waste it cannot be used on a non-overflow basin whereas a universal waste will work in any scenario.
